Late 2003, Katy Kombi, before we started to mess with her!
This is how we got Katy Kombi, only she was'nt called Katy. The previous owner had called 'her' Colin the Camper. So 'he' had to have an immediate sex change. She is a 1978 Devon Moonraker, based on the VW Kombi. She came with a 1600cc stock air cooled engine and nearly all the outside/inside fittings where intact.
The inside fittings looked reasonable when we bought her, she had an oak finish. It was only later that we discovered that someone had covered up the original trim, which had 'many' different handle holes, with oak faced plywood. The good news was that nearly all the damage to the units was repairable and most where still serviceable. Here you can see the built in 12v/gas fridge, two ring gas hob and grill, sink unit, table and buddy seat.
To our great surprise Katy is a five berth camper van. A bit of a squish but do-able. You have a 3/4 width rock and roll bed, this is the rear bench seat that pulls out. An over cab bunk bed, that clips into the window pillars at night. The remaining two berths are bunk beds that pull out from the side of Katy's walls. These are only usable by small adults and kids when the 'Pop top' roof is up. We could not use them as we are so big! We use them to carry the fishing rods on when driving.
She even had the original cushions, problem was at after 26 years the foam had collapsed from 4 inches to 2 1/2 inches and the colours had faded. These are not the original curtains, they fell apart in the first wash and the carpet was rotten.
The cupboard space was impressive, three pigeon holes at the back, a side locker, top locker over the back area, large side locker beside the seat, cupboards and draws under the hob and a large locker under the seat. The wardrobe was behind the passenger seat, this had the fold down buddy seat attached to it.
